There comes a moment, whether you are still in uniform or long removed from it, when you realize the mission runs deeper than orders, training, and deployments. The call to serve does not end; it transforms you and your life. Many service members and veterans find themselves searching, not for another assignment, but for meaning, brotherhood, and a way to live with lasting purpose. The world offers comfort, distraction, and isolation. But deep down, you know you were made for more. You didn’t join the military for luxury and comfort.
The Community of Warrior Penitents exists to answer that call. We are a Catholic brotherhood of military members and veterans committed to living the Gospel with discipline, simplicity, and courage in the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi. Through a structured prayer life, shared life, and sacrificial service, we seek to transform our lives, and the communities around us, by becoming men and women of action rooted in contemplation. This is not a departure from the mission you have known, it is its fulfillment. We view the Community of Warrior Penitents similar to a modern mendicant order for the lay faithful who also are serving, or who have served, in the military.
Through a deliberate formation process, Warrior Penitents are trained to live their faith with clarity and conviction in every environment. For those still serving, this formation equips you to bring the light of Christ into your units, your daily interactions, and the unseen moments where leadership matters most, especially when Catholic Chaplains are not present. You become a steady presence of faith, discipline, and charity among your brothers.
This is not a passive faith. It is a way of life. As Warrior Penitents, we embrace a Rule grounded in daily prayer, fraternity, and readiness to serve. We sharpen one another through accountability, carry one another through hardship, and go out together to serve those most in need, living the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy with conviction and willingness to go where we are called and to serve where we are needed.
Whether you are still serving or navigating life after service, the mission continues. You are not alone in the fight for purpose. And you are not called to walk this path without brothers and sisters ready to put the effort in to change the world for Christ.

Why Join the Community of Warrior Penitents?
You didn’t join the military for an easy life that you could coast through. Joining the Community of Warrior Penitents is a commitment to transformation, purpose, and growth. Many veterans face challenges transitioning to civilian life, struggling with a loss of structure, purpose, or camaraderie. The Community of Warrior Penitents offers a path to rediscover those essential elements through faith, service, community, and prayer. For those who are still actively serving in the military, the Community of Warrior Penitents offers a structure of prayer and formation to help prepare you to bring the Light of Christ to those around you.
- Transformation: Life as a Warrior Penitent fosters personal conversion and renewal. By living according to a Rule of Life inspired by the Franciscan tradition, members embark on a journey to deepen their faith, find healing, and cultivate a Christ-centered life.
- Community: Veterans thrive in a sense of brotherhood and the Warrior Penitents provide that bond. Through local Fraternities, members support one another in prayer, accountability, and encouragement, building lasting friendships rooted in faith.
- Service: Serving others is at the heart of the Gospel. It is through service that the love of God is not just known, but experienced. The Warrior Penitents actively live out the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy, offering their unique skills and experiences to uplift those in need. Warrior Penitents go where they are called and serve where they are needed which might not always be the safest places. They are warriors and veterans who are comfortable in places that schools and churches aren’t sending people to support.
- A Life of Prayer: The Rule calls members to a disciplined life of prayer, including the Divine Office, Scripture, and the Rosary. These practices deepen members’ relationship with God and help them carry a spirit of prayer into every aspect of life.
Joining the Community is not just about what you give, there are no dues or requests for money, it is about what you receive: a renewed sense of purpose, a supportive community, and a life that honors God through action and contemplation.
If you’re seeking a faith-filled path that integrates your experiences as a veteran with a call to live the Gospel, the Community of Warrior Penitents may be your next step.
